The Island of Rab in Croatia isn’t only rich with culture, history and heritage but is also surrounded by crystal blue waters as well as beaches galore. Settled by Illyrians in 350BC, Rab became an ancient Roman municipality in the 1st century BC and was later sold to Venice in the 15th century. Now as an island of Croatia with rich culture and scenic views, it is no wonder that it is constantly flocked with tourists and locals alike. The beauty of Rab has captured hearts to the extent that it became the place for this young family to build their holiday home despite the challenging conditions faced by the architects and developers. The plot allocated for the Palit House had overgrown shrubs, a sandy valley but it overlooked a gorgeous bay and was wedged between tourist settlement and a forest. It was the perfect opportunity for this young family to embark in this adventure of building their holiday home with the hope for plenty of future visits and usage. The plot had already contained a small house with a large covered terrace, a shed and tall stone walls that separated the plot from the road whilst supporting the terraced gardens. The new volume created by Roth and Čerina brought the edge of the plot, providing the house with the view behind whilst still cleverly framing 31 MARCH/APRIL 2019 | TM
